The current Burton Bridge is a danger for slower and less able cyclists, and a real challenge for equestrians. In addition, the hill just north of it slowly forces riders and pedestrians directly out into 40mph traffic as the shoulder completely disappears.
In the 20 year master plan, one lane is converted into a two-way path, and the bridge pedestrian lane becomes useful for cyclists and equestrians as well. Click the pictures to see them full size:
